Okay, here's our proposal story:
Nick and I had been dating for about 3-1/2 months. We were going to take a few days off work to go away for a mini snowboarding vacation. The night before we left we were at my house packing for our trip. We were talking about how excited we were to go away for a few days and how happy we were, and how in love, et cetera. Nick pulled out a wrapped box. Now, I have to say, I wasn't expecting a gift. ALSO, I have to add, that Nick LOVES videotaping things. We have all kinds of video tapes of us hiking, skateboarding, snowboarding, on vacation, etc. So he had a video camera set up so he could "capture" my reaction. So I opened up the gift, with the camera on me. It was a digital picture frame! We had already taken 2 trips together and had hundreds of digital photos, and had often talked about getting a digital frame to display them. I was so excited! I noticed that there was a memory card already in one of the slots. He said he had already preloaded some pictures so we could "test it out." I turned it on to get a better look.
OMG! Nick had taken a picture with a digital camera of EVERY PAGE OF TEXTS on his iphone since about a week after we started dating (when he first got the idea). I got all teary & hugged him. Then we sat together (with the camera still rolling), and read each other ALL of our texts! Some of it was funny, some sweet, some boring (well, the day-to-day stuff), but it all brought back so many memories. Now, Nick apparently had no idea how long it would take to read THOUSANDS of text messages because part way through we had to stop & change tapes. After almost 2 hours of reading, we got to the very last messages from earlier that day. The last screen contained an unsent message from him that said "Will you marry me?"
Of course I said yes and we hugged and kissed and cried. :)
Nick didn't give me a ring when we got engaged because he wanted me to help pick out the ring, and he wanted it all to be a surprise. So instead, we bought 2 plain, matching silver bands and had "Jane & Nick 12/12/07" (the date we got engaged) engraved on the inside, and we both wore them on our ring fingers. We set the date that night: 6/12/2010, exactly 2.5 years away.
I loved our proposal and everything about it. The only thing I would have changed was I wish I looked better in the video that night. When it all started at about 10pm at night I had already changed for bed: I had my hair in a ponytail, my old, ugly glasses on, and was wearing a baggy t-shirt & shorts. If I had known in advance it was our proposal & it was being taped, I'd have worn something less embarrassing to show other people!
Thanks, Mandy!
